Hi We had a very bizarre day yesterday. First, Mrs R's Rover 45 wouldn't start after work. Starter motor failed. Went to go and sort it in my 75 and....you guessed it....starter motor dead! Fortunately I have my son's Fiat (it starts!) while he is down in Falklands for 4 months. You couldn't make it up! After a few hours under and over both cars (including the customary cut finger!) I swapped the 45 one for one in my garage I had as spare. Off she went. Then onto the 75. Stripped down the one removed from 45, cleaned checked and back together. Fortunately on my car it was just a loose connection that must have been disturbed during replacement head. Now what are the odds on two failures with same component on both of our cars within hours?? Chris

I'm guessing that they are both K Series?
If so, it's very common for the connections on the starter to become corroded, especially the smaller connector (white wire IIRC). The starter itself is probably fine, by swapping things you have probably cleaned up the connection enough to start the car.
If you have an early 1.8 75 with full undertray then they are usually OK, due to the protection from the elements offered by the undertray, later ones with the short undertray suffer, as do all 45s, R3s and R8s that don't have undertrays.
I fitted a full undertray to my ZT after similar problems and it's been fine ever since.

My Starter was a loose connection disturbed when we put the remanufactured head on. That sorted easily. The 45 starter was stuck. Only operated when given a whack! fortunately I have a spare one in shed and car back in full working order. Unlike my knuckle!Argggggh! I took the one removed apart and it was filthy. Given it a good clean up including brushes and armature. When I get round to it will swap them again and see if problem solved. Suspect it will be as looks in good order now. The live feed on the 45 starter was showing signs of corrosion but sorted now. Cheers Chris

Yeh, I've been caught out a few time with cars not starting. Everytime it has been poor connections. # 1 culprit.

It's weird how these things "come out in sympathy" I've recently witnessed several cases of this 1. Driver turns up with tachograph fault on a Daf 8 wheeler, 20 mins later their workshop foreman rings me to tell me about a tachograph fault on a Daf 8 wheeler "Oh that was in this morning" "Er no it wasn't" "Well I've had one of your Dafs in with that fault" "This is it's sister ship"
2. Couple of weeks ago one of our Scanias burst it's radiator, Tuesday afternoon our other one does the same
3. In the last month 4 out of 5 of our 18 tonne Ivecos have needed reverse light switches
